Ah, The joys of a simple nine patch! Sometimes you just want to sew and not think! and this was one of those times.  I took 2 years of sewing with the rainbow scrap challenge at so scrappy to make the pieces for this single  Irish chain by melissa correy. I made the 4 patches in 2019, and the sashings in 2020 according to the color of the month. The top was a top in  November 2020. It was an easy, unstressful pattern, and then, it was a great quilt.

In 1825, 14-year-old Jane Valentine started an Irish Chain quilt. Five years and 10,092 blocks later, her quilt was finally complete. 

According to the National Museum of American History, Jane used 130 different cotton prints and a plain white background that is quilted “6 stitches per inch with a flower motif.” 

(Keep in mind, every one of those tiny stitches was done by hand. No wonder it took 5 years!)

Dieses Jahr fiel es mir erstaunlich schwer, mich mit der Weihnachts Dekokration für den Laden zu beschäftigen. Die rechte Stimmung will einfach nicht aufkommen. Geht euch das auch so? Was ein Glück gibt es Pinterest! Ich bin ja begeisterte Sammlerin von Pins mit Quiltmustern, die ich einfach schön finde oder mal irgendwann sogar machen will. Auf der Suche nach einen passenden Quilt bin ich dort auf das klassische Muster Irish Chain gestoßen; nicht kompliziertes, aber schön anzuschauen!

It's December already. We had a few snow drops, yesterday, as it threatens to be winter. I made it to the gym three times last week, and, I went yesterday. So far, no problems. I know it is time to set new goals for the month for my quilting. I still feel a little sluggish from the change of time zones. So, I think I will keep it simple and plan on finishing a quilt that is ready to be quilted. If I get more done than that ...yippee.

 I webbed the Irish chain quilt at retreat last week. This was one of my rainbow scrap challenge projects. I have worked on it for 2 years.

I had one last row to do for the row by row quilt.  I dug out turquoise scraps and cut 3 1/2 inch hsts. I made the row, and, started joining rows. 

I pieced the top, cut the back, and prepared the binding. It is waiting a turn on the longarm.

The red blocks for my Irish chain quilt are ready, and, all I need are the yellows. I have worked on this quilt over the last two years for the rainbow scrap challenge. The first year, I did the 4 patches, and, this year, I am making the blocks.

This was a friend Linda's quilt - smith mountain morning -in red and brown. We took the Bonnie hunter class together in Lafayette. Mine was gray and yellow. I quilted hers in red.

I have started putting the joining the rainbow row x row quilt, and finished the 2nd red row ...

I didn't get this purple group of blocks posted last month, during purple at the rainbow scrap challenge. These blocks are part of my rainbow irish chain, that, I have been adding to each month since last year. Last year, I made the 4 patches, and, this year, I am making the bigger block. I was inspired by this quilt.

Nothing beats a classic. The master level quilts that our grandmothers once stitched by hand with precision and care have never been easier to recreate with modern methods. Many of these patterns are surprisingly simply with just a little effort and dedication, but why take our word for it when you can find out on your own!

This week I worked on the rainbow irish chain blocks for the rainbow scrap challenge. I have been able to stay current with this quilt.

The Irish Chain is one of my favorite classic quilts, but Jenny’s Irish Change is even better!

• This quilt was designed for pretty fabric. The 10-inch squares are left uncut, so favorite prints can really shine!

• This quilt is HUGE! At 101 inches square, it’s the perfect size for a queen bed! 

• This quilt is delightfully quick & easy! The secret? All those criss crossing “chains” are made with simple strip sets!

I am using a new ironing philosophy to see if I like the end results better. I have more twisted seams than I would like at the final stages of a quilt top. I am going to wait until I piece the top to really iron my blocks. I want to see if waiting until the end helps me nest the seams better when joining blocks. So the pictures of blocks will look a little wonky when I share. Who knows, maybe all I will learn is that I have only postponed the inevitable.

Last year, for the rainbow scrap challenge, I made 4 patches for an Irish chain quilt, This year, I am adding the sashing units to make the whole block.

Last year I made the 4 patches for an Irish chain quilt. This year, I will make the chaining pieces as part of my rainbow challenge quilt.

Just in time for the rainbow scrap challenge check in, I have a rainbow top finished. It was so fun to see the chain come together as I sewed the rows. Each of the color parts are strips and crumbs sewn together to make "fabric". It is called end of the rainbow.

I needed the last color to finish putting the Irish chain quilt together. But, with the end of the year, I have lost momentum on the rainbow quilts.
I am guessing, I am concerned with getting all wips for the year nestled in their winter homes for the wait for the start of a new year and new goals. It's a myth I still believe, that January first all the ufos disappear into a happier place, and I can just start any old thing I want..... again.... shhh don't tell me...
